Mister Peeper’s School of Infectious Acting
This is an article that I wrote for Oz Magazine, published by Gary and Tia Powell of Oz Publishing. I created the drawing of Mr. Peeper, Oz Magazine provided the layout.
My first experience on a big budget movie was as an extra, so I’ve always felt protective of this lowly rung of the movie business. Still, some extras are so outlandishly bizarre that they earn the satirical moniker of ‘background artist’, and this article told the tale of just such an individual. Here’s an excerpt:
“You’ve got to gesture… GESTURE!” he scolded, holding his hands in front of his face, palms turned skyward. Each time he said “gesture” his neck would sink down and his hands would push up. His physical expression of outrage looked more like a Monty Python skit about an inept recruiter for the Marcel Marceau Academy of Exaggerated Pantomime.”
